Visit to Lea Valley Velodrome

May 8, 2022

On Wednesday 4th May 2022 12 members and guests of the WKRC attended the world famous Lea Valley velodrome at the Olympic Park Stratford to take part in a 2 hour taster session riding on the track used by all British champions since the Olympics and in all major track competitions.

On arrival we hired out our Condor fixed wheel bikes and those without Look Keo shoes were given adapters or could hire shoes with Look Keo cleats. We then changed and met our British Cycling coach Andy who gave us a very concise but humorous briefing about the use of bikes as many of the group had not ridden fixed wheel bikes before. The main advice given was keep pedalling!

The higher angle of track can be daunting when you are on the Cote D Azur the large blue line at the base of the track.  But anyway off we set and it was a testament to our coach that after about 15 minutes we were all riding at the top of the track and enjoying the session.

We then filled the 2 hour session with skill drills and free time rides and finally we all gave it one timed lap at maximum blast to the sound of the famous bell which was won by Michael Ashcroft.

Thankfully we had plenty of thrills but NO spills and at 10pm we all went home safely after having a great night.

If we get sufficient interest we may hold another event next year.
